Chapter 1: Introduction Transport doesn’t only look towards physical movement from one place to another but is much larger and inculcates different things like money, effort, time, global issues, outdoor education, resources, road safety and conservation. Background of the Research Policy makers have highlighted the importance and relationship which exist between land use, transport, health and other sustainability issues. This has made considerable amount of research to be undertaken in that direction so that the manner which will help in the development of a sustainable transport facility can be ensured. Abu Dhabi is looking towards an increased dependence on cars while looking to commute from one place to another and has thereby made sustainability an issue which needs to be addressed and looked at. The increased dependence on car is associated with the increased dependence on fossil fuels for the different public transport. It has been found that the dependence on car has raised different health issues like respiratory problems, obesity and overweight. The dependence on car has also raised issues associated with social justice as people based on their limited income find it difficult to deal with the decreasing mobility options which have an impact on their lifestyle making it difficult to sustain a normal life. The concept of sustainability is thereby an important issue which and looks to take control of a broad view of the transport system which will provide an opportunity to deal with issues associated with the health issues, energy consumption, pollution, social equity and other economic cost which the society has to face. This thereby requires development of a public mode of transport which looks towards achieving sustainability and developing a process through which people are able to use the different resources to improve the condition of the society and to provide a framework through which sustainability transport model can be developed. Research Aim & Objective The research looks towards finding out the perception of people towards using metros in Abu Dhabi and identifying the different dimensions and aspect through which their perception can be moulded towards the use of metros. This will help to reduce the dependence on other mode of transport and will provide an opportunity through which new and better mode of transport for people to commute from one place to another will be determined. The research will thereby help to understand the different focus points through which change in behaviour of people can be ensured and will look to integrate the different aspect and areas so that better development of a process which looks at sustainability mode of transport is identified. This will help the government to go ahead with the model of setting up a metro in Abu Dhabi and will provide the required dimensions and areas which need to be focused so that the long term success of metros can be ensured. The research will also bring about a change in which people feel about the usage of public mode of transport and the manner in which Abu Dhabi will be able to transform its economy and continue with the path of progress which other developed economies are using. This will help to improve the manner in which people look at different facets of public transport and will facilitate a process for setting up a sustainability transport model which focuses on different issues and helps to improve the overall condition of the society. Research Question The study will look at finding out the attitude of people towards metro stations and its usage in Abu Dhabi. This will help to provide useful insights regarding the manner in which people can be encouraged to use metros while commuting and the changes it will bring with regard to the social and environmental aspect of Dubai. This insights will give direction regarding the phases through which metro development process can take place and the manner in which it will yield different benefits to the society on the whole. The research thereby will to address the following questions To identify the perception and attitude of people towards the use of metro stations while commuting from one place to another? To find out the social and environmental impact which usage of metros will have on the life of common people and the society on the whole? To identify the different factors and dimensions based on which people can be persuaded to use metros instead of other mode of transport? Different Issues which the research will address The research will also look towards addressing the different issues and will bring forward the manner in which the perception and attitude of the people will be understood and can be changed based on it. The different issues which the research will look to thereby address is as Environmental Issues: The interest in the topic lies as it will help to understand the perception of people regarding the usage of metros in comparison to other form of transport. The process will look at providing environmental education to the people and will encourage people to use metros so that a sustainable mode of transport is developed. It is imperative that people tend towards using sustainable mode of transport so that a better society can be developed where different health and other issues are looked at. This will help to bring forward the different issues and aspects associated with global issues, outdoor education, resources, road safety and conservation so that the manner and process in which metros are developed and laid can be better identified. In addition to it the study will look at encouraging people towards using metros for commuting and will make people to undertake the responsibility and opportunities which use of metros will provide. The role of the government and community is to ensure that the negative environmental impacts which impacts people is reduced and positive impacts are maximized so that the society is able to gain on a whole. This will thereby help to bring about a change in the behaviour of individuals and will make people to use a more sustainable mode of transport which is environmental friendly. Health Issues: In addition to the different positive environmental implications which metros provide it will also help to deal with the different health issues which are associated with the usage of cars? Studies have highlighted that different heart and other ailments are associated with the usage of cars. It has been seen that using cars results in different health issues like respiratory problems, overweight and obesity. This will be addressed through the usage of metros and will thereby ensure that people are fitter and their risk associated with usage of cars or other medium of transport will be understood. This will also help people to improve their health and provide an opportunity where travelling and socializing with strangers will be possible at the same time. The usage of metro as a mode of transport is universally applicable and available to people of all age groups and especially socio-economic groups who prefer public mode of transport while commuting. This will thereby help to bring about the required transformation in the life of people and will provide a platform through which more and more people will look towards adopting the mode of transport and will become committed both towards oneself and the society at a large. Road Safety: The present culture which is quite evident in Abu Dhabi is one of cars where people prefer to use it for travelling from one place to another. This has raised issues associated with the number of accidents which are taking place. Abu Dhabi is constantly witnessing a rise in road accidents which needs to be checked and controlled. Using metros will help to address those issues as it will help to reduce the chances of accidents as the volume of cars which is being used will reduce. This will provide an opportunity where people who are using cars will be provided the required space to travel from one place to another as the volume of traffic will reduce. This will have a positive impact on the pockets of people as travelling from one place to another at a lower cost will become an option which is not present at the moment. This will thereby help to improve safety on roads and will provide an opportunity through better mode of transport will be developed. Social Exclusion: The usage of metros will also help to develop a mode of transport which is inexpensive and can be used by marginalized group of people. A large section of the population of Abu Dhabi doesn’t own a car and similarly a large number of people don’t have driving license. This is aid towards them improving the overall condition of the people and will provide an opportunity where people can use public transport while commuting from one place to another. This will have a social impact and will help to bring about the required change and transformation with which different social decisions are taken and will provide an opportunity to improve the social condition and strengthen the manner in which people move towards the usage of metros. Rationale for the Study There is a need to develop a public mode of transport which is more sustainable and provides an opportunity for the society to improve their living conditions. Metros seem to be an option as will look to address the different needs of the people. Apart from being cheap from other mode of transport it is faster and don’t have to face the traffic which cars or other medium of transport faces. This will help to increase the pace at which the different development takes place in life. Further, Abu Dhabi is constantly growing and its population is surging. This has thereby increased the volume of traffic on roads and requires developing a mechanism or process which looks at dealing with the issue and provides better environmental dimensions through which productivity and prosperity will improve. The study will thereby help to address those issues and highlight the different concerns which are associated on a daily basis while looking to use metros and will provide a solution for it. This will also provide the perception of people and will help to understand the manner in which people will accept metros if Abu Dhabi was looking to have one for its people. The research doesn’t only look to address the manner in which metros will help the society, community and the people in commuting from one place to another as it is something which has been already researched before. Instead this research will something different and will look at understanding the manner in which people can be encouraged to use metros after understanding their perception so that a change can be brought in the behaviour of people. This will thereby help to understand and identify the different dimensions through which better public mode of transport can be developed and the impact it will have on the overall condition of the society. The study will thereby not only be a dissertation but will also provide useful information regarding the perception and people and the manner in which it can be changed so that use of metros is encouraged. This can be used by government and other bodies so that advocacy towards the usage of metros is garnered. This can also be used as basic dimensions through which the setting up of metros in Abu Dhabi can be carried forward and the overall impact it will have on the life of people and the manner in which the government can bring about a change in the social aspect of the society.
