A MODERN MOTOR CAR Name Professor Institution Course Date Abstract The content of this document reports describes the suitability of material investigation and selection on a modern motor car. It touches on issues that concern the relationship between the modern motor car and the material suitability for its various components and the mechanical properties involved the emission of greenhouse gases in the course of both the production as well as the transportation of the materials. The cost of life cycle associated with the introduction and operation of the modern motor car is also described as well as the energy efficiency and the environmental impacts as a result of the operation of the car. The report further offers comprehensive information with regard to the relationship between the fuel consumption in modern motor car and the environmental impacts as well as the associated costs. The benefits of material investigation and selection process in the manufacture of a modern motor car are very fundamental in the determination of the success of ate operation and functionality of modern motor car. Introduction The investigation and selection of materials on a modern car is significant in the fulfillment several approval criteria. Other criteria are put into use as a result legislation and regulation with safety and environmental concerns as well as some requirements that are demanded by the customers. On several occasions there have been conflicting scenario and for this reason, the possibility of success in the design of a modern motor car is realized through a balanced and optimized solution. The application of material investigation and selection currently, unlike in the past, is fashioned in a variety of ways in order to satisfy the modern design requirements (Davies, 2012). Several materials that are used in the manufacture of modern vehicles do not exist in their pure form but rather they exist in the form of ores. Currently, the science of materials has had an enormous and rapid expansion that any application of material in the manufacture on vehicles as well as other engineering components and systems has to take into consideration the idea of material investigation and selection. With regard to the relationship between material selection and car components, innovation and advancements in technology such as throttles that are controlled by the computer and electronic fuel injection are developments that require careful investigation and selection of appropriate materials. Usage of stronger and lighter engineering materials in the manufacturing of different components in modern cars has led to the improvements of the efficiency in the functionality of the engine in the modern car (Brebbia and Wessex, 2010). Suitability of the materials for various components The manufacture and production of a modern car places a lot of emphases on the materials that are used the suitability of material selection and usage for various components with regard to the mechanical properties of the available materials for application. The suitability of material selection in various industries involved in the manufacture of automotive is aimed at the reduction of the weight especially for the modern motor cars. In this case the aspect of fuel consumption reduction and efficiency improvement is given the fast priority. However there is also the idea of production cost optimization that is taken into consideration (Kosky and Wise, 2006). Material suitability for various components with regard to mechanical properties is basically concerned with the intended function or the application in which the intended modern motor car components is expected to carry out. Matrix components that are aluminium based are recently used together with reinforcement from the ceramic particulate to manufacture the components of modern car that are required for greater strength application while still maintaining the much needed low density. The improvements in the material suitability evaluation for the modern motor car applications are highly dependent on their potential for better performance when subjected to adverse conditions. An example of the modern automobile components that takes material suitability with regard to the mechanical properties is the brake disk which is a very critical component as far as the safety of the motor car is concerned. The investigation and selection of materials that are applied for use in the manufacture of the braking system of a modern motor car has got to have a reliable and stable wear and frictional properties under various conditions of velocity, load, temperature as well as a higher durability (Lehmhus, 2013). Other key factors are taken into consideration during material investigation and selection of the material for application in the manufacture of the brake disc for a modern motor include the efficiency of the manufacturing process as well as the cost effectiveness of the processes involved. Other components that are also significantly considered in the process of suitability material selection with regard to mechanical properties include the interior fabric, the frame, the crumble zone as well as the bumper (Stauber and Vollrath, 2007). Chassis layout and its main Components The Frame-Toyota Tundra chassis Material selection for various components in the in the manufacture of the modern car with regard to the required mechanical properties is performed in various stages that involve the use of several methods that have since gone through transformations to attain the prominence position. The process of material investigation and selection is usually an open-ended process and in most cases it leads to the realization various possible material options for use in addressing the modern car components design and manufacture problems. This can be demonstrated by the fact that similar functions are performed by similar components. However the similar components are manufactured differently through different processes of manufacturing from materials of various mechanical properties (Kulshreshtha and Vasile, 2002). Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases generated during the production and the transportation of the material The production and transportation processes of materials used in the manufacture of the modern motor car takes into consideration the generation and release of carbon dioxide as well as other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The modern motor car idea has operated on some major policies that are also associated with the choices made by their consumers. It has been established that the efficient and clean technology that is adopted by the modern motor cars is operational on the basis of principles governing aspects such as the emission of gases into the atmosphere. The advanced efficient fuel consumption technology decreases the emission of pollutant gaseous substances into the atmosphere. This is in comparison to the previous standard motor car. While it is much possible to achieve a reduction in the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases through appropriate design and process selection there is still the challenge that is associated with the cost of achieving that. Carbon monoxide which is usually a product of incomplete combustion results from the inefficient combustion systems in the engine of a motor car. A lot of carbon monoxide is released into the atmosphere in cases of too low fuel to air ratios in the engine when the vehicle is starting or when the motor car is not properly tuned. At higher altitudes however the amount of carbon dioxide released increases due to the reduction in the availability of oxygen for combustion. Environmental impact of the operation of the car The environmental impacts that are associated with the operation of the modern motor car are mostly beneficial to the environment. A lot of the choices of modern motor car designs are found to bring about an improvement to the environment with regard to most of the categories of the environmental impacts (Brebbia and Wessex, 2010). The extent of these benefits differs from the operation of one model of a modern motor car to the other. The beneficial environmental impacts obtained from the operation of the modern motor cars are particularly more for the electric powered cars as well as the hybrid motor cars. Moreover, those are the modern motor car models with the most important benefits as far as the life cycle and operation of the modern motorcars are concerned. The beneficial environmental impacts are mostly brought about by the fact that these modern motor cars have got higher energy efficiency in terms of fuel utilization. Efficient utilization of fuel does not only lead to environmental benefit but also to the benefits that are associated with the cost of operation. The consideration of the general benefits of as determined by the operation costs indicates that various modern car models have got environmental impacts that are similar with regard to the type of fuel that is consumed in the process. That is whether diesel, petrol or electric charge is. However, there are two exceptions. One involves the environmental and technical ability electric modern motor car being considered superior to both diesel and petrol motor cars. The other exception has to do with the fact that the benefits to the environment that are expected from the systems of abatement are very high for the diesel fuel car. It is noticed that that some of the modern car model choices that are adopted by the designers and engineers are expected to not only present advantages and benefits but there are also some disadvantages that are associated with them. The key trade-offs that are suggested are concerned with the environmental impacts that are associated with the energy consumption efficiencies and the release of pollutant gaseous substances especially the greenhouse gases. Cars that are light in weight are beneficial to the environment in the sense that their light weight leads to reduced fuel consumption and therefore less pollution to the environment. However, depending in the option of weight reduction, increase in generation of waste and pollutant gaseous substances is expected to be released in that phase of production (Kosky and Wise, 2006). Potential application areas (grey in color) of branded hybrid composites Life cycle cost The cost of the life cycle of a modern motorcar is greatly dependent on the kind of materials selected for its manufacture among other factors. Other factors include the nature of services that it offers and the fuel or energy usage. A modern motor car is one that aims at the optimization of the operational and life cycle cost. Currently, nearly a bigger portion of the energy that is used up in the operation of modern motor cars is obtained from the processing of crude oil. There are various problems and hence cost that are associated with the transportation and consumption of crude oil (Davies, 2012). Despite this, energy from crude oil source is the one that is majorly used by most modern motor cars in many countries. However, the introduction enhanced and energy efficient modern motor cars are a major step towards the reduction of life cycle cost that is incurred mainly in the operation and maintenance of modern motor cars. This reduction is achieved through the introduction of alternative fuel and energy technologies in the place of the conventional crude oil fuel and energy sources. It is believed that the life cost cycle cost of modern could be considerably reduced by the introduction and adoption of the fuel cell technology. There are more expectations with regard to the fuel cell technology that it will certainly ultimate solution to the transportation cost problems as well as other problem that are concern the technical infrastructure issues. Other technology that also contribute to a reduction in the lifecycle cost for most modern motor cars it the technology involved in the manufacture and production of hybrid motor cars. Various studies have been carried out and they have suggested that it is more beneficial to encourage and work towards the development of hybrid modern motor cars than the introduction of fuel cell motor cars. Researchers have also been able to find out that in the next ten years the entire energy consumption system of a diesel hybrid motor car could be lower by 20 percent of the entire energy consumption of the system when consuming fuel from the hydrogen cell (Lehmhus, 2013). Conclusion In conclusion, the suitability of material investigation and selection especially with regard to the introduction of f improved operating condition for a modern motor car is clearly a necessity in the automotive industry. This is because it is clearly demonstrated that there are several benefits that are associated with this idea of suitability of material investigation and selection in the manufacture and operation of a modern motor car such as reduction in the life cycle cost, improvement of the energy efficiency in its engine functionality as well as reduced negative impact on the environment.
