In this paper, I would like to share one of my unforgettable experiences, which made me feel proud of myself as well as helped me realize the importance of the role a person can play in the life of another person. The incident, which I am going to relate, is an on-the-job incident in which I saved my friend from a big injury.

The injury would have made him disabled for his whole life. My friend and I worked in my uncle’s sugar mill in New Orleans a couple of years ago. We had summer holidays at that time. We wanted to spend that time in a useful way. Therefore, my uncle suggested me to join his sugar mill to pass the time and get some professional experience. I also asked my friend to accompany me. My friend agreed and we started working. We worked in that mill for 3 months as sugarcane chopping machine operators.

Here, I would like to mention that a number of processes take place that convert raw form of sugar into the usable form. Sugar cane chopping is one such process in which large moving gears chop the sugarcanes. Operating the chopping machine is not an easy task. One needs to apply force on the paddle through hands to keep the gears moving. Therefore, managers of sugar mills usually hire more than one operator to reduce the workload. Each operator operates the machine usually from 60 to 90 minutes in each turn.

My friend and I used to operate the machine in such a way that, for one hour, my friend used to operate it, and for the next hour, it used to be my turn to operate the machine. We were enjoying working in the sugar mill. However, one day, a frightening incident occurred with us in the mill, which made us frightened as well as alarmed for the future. I had done the first round's one-hour duty that day, and now it was my friend’s turn to operate the moving gears. He went near the machine and positioned himself to operate the machine.

Here, I would like to mention that I used to leave the machine area after checking everything at the workplace as well as the position of my friend at the machine. That day, when I was about to leave the machine area, I saw that one of my friend’s feet was between the gears and he was not aware of that. The thing, which distracted his attention from the situation, was the phone call, which he was attending. He was so much involved in the call that he was unaware of the position of his right foot.

He would have injured his foot as well as his leg. He was about to press the switch when I noticed the position of his right foot. I shouted and climbed at him within no time and dragged him away from his place. Had I wasted a couple of seconds thinking what to do, the moving gears would have crushed my friend’s foot. My friend was eager to start his professional career as soon as possible because his family was facing financial problems at that time. However, he would have faced a setback before the start of his professional career due to the little negligence that he showed during work.

I felt relieved and happy to save my friend’s life. This incident and my response to the situation define my overall personality and my approach towards dealing with different situations. For example, the incident shows that I take care of my own safety as well as of all other people working with me. I am a caring person who likes to help others in their difficult times in order to make them come out of their problems in an appropriate manner. In the incident described above, my presence in the machine control room for the first few minutes of my friend’s turn shows my concern towards ensuring workplace safety for everyone.

It was not my legal obligation to be there when it was my friend’s turn to operate the moving gears. I was there just to ensure the safety of my friend. Summing it up, I would say that the incident made me feel proud of myself as well as made my friend and me aware of the importance of concentrating towards work while at work.
