Sexuality and Culture A Relationship Analysis Introduction Sex is the need of every living creature on the planet. Creator has created everything in pairs that are meant for attraction towards each other, indulging into sexual interaction and thus cause the generations to come forward. The fact that the sex and sexuality is not a very touched upon topic in relationship to the cultural context, this arises the need of analysis how different cultures and the factor of sexuality are inter-related. In Earlier days, or say from Adam and Eve, there exists the attraction for a male towards a female and thus they indulge into the sexual relationship. But the way they express their intentions of sex, the way they act during sex and the way they like the sexual relationship to form and proceed are different from culture to culture, region to region and interest to interest. The world has changed at a real faster pace over the last one century. Cultures in the regions have evolved and there is a clear distinction between different norms and values in different cultures. Sex is one of those topics that are very well the part of every one’s nature but it is also a function of the culture. How two mating persons express their feelings for sex, how do they indulge, what signals do they give, what body postures and what language do they use for expressing their desire for sex differs greatly from culture to culture. “Give me Love”; “I want to feel you”; “Come on, let\s have sex”. One can easily realize that these various expressions, all describing a state of emotional expression and desperate desire to indulge into sexual activity with the second partner relate to different cultures. One way or the other, people living inside a society or belonging to a particular culture will absorb the meaning of the phrase or the sentence in the way their culture is formed into. Thus in different cultures, the desire to have sex will be expressed in a different way and probably in few of the cultures, there might be very frequent expressions of sexuality and in others there may be very infrequent expressions for sex, acceptable or ‘logical’ to the culture. In this paper, we will assess the influence of the cultural norms and values with the sexuality overall (Refinetti 2000). Though with the globalization of the world and increasing personnel movement across the globe, there has evolved a situation where many cultures are intersected at various points and people belonging to one culture, may exhibit behaviors related to some other cultures at times, but the extent of the influence of the culture on sexuality is still evident It can be consciously said that the cultural norms if seen with the context of the region and the society a person lives in dictates in a better way, a person exhibits his behaviors. Cultural Product under Discussion Various cultures in the world have very different and unique ways of expressing the desire of sex. In few of the cultures, there may be very few instances when a male might express to the female, his desire to indulge in the sexual interaction. Whereby, indulging into sex may be considered something very sacred or treating it as an ‘event’ thus making it a very rare occasional call for sex. Whereas in some cultures, the way a male would express his desire to sexually interact with the female partner may be just as having dine out at the weekend. This is all very much influenced by the culture a person lives into. Therefore, it is necessary for the matter of discussion and analysis that a particular cultural product or a society be chosen to look into the cultural aspects of sexuality. Touching someone gently might arouse for sex in one society, but may be a norm and might not be seen a \call for sex in some other culture. Here we would analyze the sexuality in the context of the Eastern culture, and more specifically that in the sub-continent that is Indian region. Since, |Western culture is very much open and there is a lot of data available that demonstrates the cultural impacts of sexuality in the society, it would be fruitful to have a look in the Eastern part. The importance of choosing a particular culture in terms of the region can be evident from the fact that in Western countries, wearing a tight dress by a female might not entice a male for sex, but in the Eastern culture, wearing a tight dress exposing female body parts may seduce a male towards sex. Similarly, in Europe, going Naked might not be as ‘explicit’ or sexual as going Naked in some Western country like Australia or Canada. Thus it very much affects the way a culture is formed as well as urbanized over a period of time and what is acceptable to what level in a particular society. Thus here, for a reference purpose, the cultural product would be Aladdin, a common guy indulged into love with the princess Jasmine contrast to the Western character of Johnny Bravo who has a typical flirty style towards girls he meet to In a typical Western culture, the bars, stripping and nude beaches would be a common part of the developed culture unlike an Eastern culture (McNair 2002). Analysis As the cultural focus would be on Eastern one and more particularly on the Indian sub-continent, it is important to know that unlike Western culture, in the Indian culture, giving a smiling gesture, a touch by a mature male to a female gently, kissing someone and giving \eye signals’ may be considered strong calls for sex, while in the Western culture, a male might touch and kiss a woman without having even a slight intention of having sex. Therefore, a sexual call is quite sensitive in the Eastern culture as opposed to the Western one. But it is an interesting fact that the people who indulge in sex in the Western region outnumber the people indulges in sex in the Eastern region irrelevant of the basis of the ‘legal’ relationship. For purpose of sharp contrast, we can consider an example of Johnny Bravo, having a typical Western touch in his style in attracting girls and being attracted with the enticing dressing of the women compared to ‘Aladdin’ relatively having an Eastern touch, expressing his feelings to Jasmine through smiles and typically having an inclination of sex towards a single female partner. Analyzing the culture of East in context of sexuality, we observe that the enjoyment of the relationship for sex is more eternal in both the sex partners compared to that of their Western counterpart. The feelings, expressions and the body language to express the sense of desire and indulgence has lots more meanings when an Eastern female would intend to attract an Eastern male for sexual relationship. Thus the theory of ‘good sex’ and ‘bad sex’ is very much different depending on the cultural norms of a society (Aggleton 2007, 161). Similarly, there is a vast contrast of the ‘type’ of partner with whom someone in Eastern culture would attract compared to someone in Western culture. Typically in modern era, Western culture might not really consider the relationship of the partner or at a least priority whereas a typical Eastern male would consider the relationship, acquaintance and the preliminary gesture of the partner for sexual appeal. One very important factor related to the Eastern norm of sexuality is that in Eastern culture, the couple would prefer too much privacy, secrecy of the sexual relationship and avoid indulging in sex in an open environment. For instance we took the example of Aladdin in Eastern culture, where he would prefer to entice Jasmine in somewhere secrecy compared to a typical Western Johnny Bravo who may indulge into attractions even in an open. Also, there are some typical styles in the Eastern culture for instance; Kama sutra is very much popular in sexuality and attraction in various parts of the world, though it has its origin in an Eastern culture, typically an Indian origin. Hence, a typical Indian cultural sense is very evident when we talk about Kama sutra styles of sex. This may involve factors influenced by culture including secrecy, calmness, modesty, privacy and relationship of the couple at the time of sexual intercourse. In an Eastern culture, the dressing and they body gesture of the female is very much important in enticing a male towards sexual intercourse. For instance, a skirt and down blouse in the Western culture may not be the ‘obvious’ signal from a woman towards a man for sexual desire, whereas in an Eastern culture, a female wearing skirt and down blouse would be very evident signs of her arousal towards a male for intercourse (Jackson, Jieyu and Juhyun 2008, 100). Conclusion This is evident from above discussion that the sexuality has a strong dependency on the culture one belongs to. The ways in which one demonstrates his or her desire for sex and indulgence into sexuality would be very much reflected by the cultural linkage. There are evident differences with regard to the culture in which the couples would express their feelings and execute the sexual intercourse. Bibliography Aggleton, Peter.
