TASK 3: AN INFORMATIVE BOOKLET FOR MANAGERS Purpose and Importance of Induction, Training and Appraisal in a Business Today To Ensure an Effective Workforce. Notably, from the above analysis, it has been apparent that proper recruitment and workforce management are among the major aspects that are associated with human resource management. However, it will be vial to depict that the benefits of proper recruitment and workforce management can only be attained when the managers are involved in effective handling of the selected human resource and steering them towards attaining the goals and objectives of the business. In this regard, managers need to comprehend certain specific points that have utmost prominence in the management of employees within the workplace. Contextually, managers in any industry sector including the hotel or hospitality sector have the need to get well acquainted with the purpose and the importance of induction and training along with appraisal in effective workforce management. Staff induction programs are designed with the intention to provide an overview of the working conditions along with core values and ethics of the business to the new joinees. It is vital for the companies in the sense that it ensures the new employees to get quickly acquainted with the working process of the business along with performing as per their skills and competencies as early as possible. This aspect is also deemed to be quite relevant in the hospitality sector where effective and proactive operations of the employees further set the overall image of the company in front of the potential customers. It can be stated for the managers in the hospitality sector including the management of the Hilton hotels group that effective induction programs include certain specific points. These aspects encompass stating the policies and working procedures of the company to the employees, having an introduction with the existing team members along with introducing the infrastructure of the company among others (Armstrong 70-90). Similar to induction program, training and development is also another vital approach of the managers in building an effective workforce. Training and development accelerates the performance of the employees as they are able to enhance and develop their skills and competencies. Training and development also enables employees to get acquainted with the working process of the company. For example, when a candidate joins a company as a full time employee, he/she has little knowledge about the type and the standards of work performed in the workplace. Consequently, the role of proper and systematic training and development came into existence. Correspondingly, employee appraisal is one more facet that should be taken into consideration by the managers to ensure the effectiveness of their work as a leader. It is believed that employee appraisal is directly associated with employee motivation. Motivated employees work with more dedication and efficiency and show higher productivity as compared to the reverse. Besides, with the prevalence of a proper appraisal system, employees are aware that they are being monitored by the management which further impacts their performance positively. For example, when employees know that they will be praised and rewarded for their good work, they are ascertained to be more dedicated towards fulfilling their job roles and responsibilities in an efficient manner altogether. Main Reasons (moral, ethical and legal) for an Equal Opportunities Policy and its Importance for the Present and the Potential Employees. Notably, discrimination in the workplace is quite common in the present day scenario. There are cases where employees are being obstructed from professional growth despite appreciative performance on the ground of their race, gender or nationality. Subsequently, it will be crucial to have a common legislation for all the employees so that they can enjoy equal opportunities within the workplace on the basis of their performance irrespective of their racial or demographic background. In this regard, the equal opportunities policy will be vital to discuss. Equal opportunities policy refers to the aspect where people are treated equally and are provided with equal opportunity for growth within the workplace or their job role. This also signifies that an employer will not discriminate the employees on the basis of sex, caste, race, language or social status. For example, HSBC, as an employer believed in providing equal opportunity only on the basis of their performance of conduct. Similar approach can also be seen in the case of Hilton hotels group operating worldwide (HSBC, “HSBC - An Equal Opportunities Employer”). Notably, the primary reasons for the initiation of the equal opportunities concept are relevant to moral, legal and ethical aspects. It is quite unethical and immoral not to reward employees equally for their hard work. Employees ensure the deliverance of effective results from their conduct so that they are rewarded for their hard work. However, denying them from their deserved appreciation and opportunity is completely immoral or unethical. Besides, it has been also viewed that discrimination in the workplace is an illegal approach of the employer. Several laws have been enacted in this regard to forbid discrimination from the society (Jacobs 1-15). Hence, denying equal opportunity can also be considered illegal. It will be crucial to mention that an equal opportunities policy is advantageous for both the present as well as the future employees along with the employer altogether. Notably, with providing equal opportunities to the present employees, an employer could be able to motivate the employees towards ensuring higher productivity and efficacy from their work which is again beneficial for the overall business. Moreover, when companies are able to ensure the practice of equal opportunities policy within the workplace, they should assure workplace diversity and can further able to enhance its corporate social image. Companies that comply with the norms of equal opportunities legislation will be able to attract maximum potential candidates in the future as they can expect a better growth opportunity for themselves through their association with the respective company. Key Element of Different Types of UK Legislation That Relevant To Workers and Organizations. Employment legislation is enacted with the intention to safeguard the rights of the employer and the employees in the workplace. There are also certain specific legislations that govern legal operations of the companies operating in the nation. Observably, the Employment Rights Act 1996 of UK deals with the aspect where employers are instructed to adhere to the minimum wage national policy. The Act also works towards eradicating the aspect of unfair treatment within the workplace for both the employer and the employees. Moreover, the Sex Discrimination Act, 1975 protects the employees from victimizing through sexual discrimination in the domain of recruitment and promotion for good work among others. This particular Act limits the negative approach of the employer or any other concerned authority in the process of recruitment, selection or internal appraisal. The Race Relations Act, 1976 obstructs the employers to discriminate within the workplace on racial grounds which are again deemed to be one of the major elements of discrimination. Again, the Disability Discrimination Act, 1995 limits the approach of the concerned authorities in business where they discriminate and deny equal opportunities to the employees on the basis of the physical disability of the employees. The Working Time Directive 1999 sets a particular working hour for the employees above which they could not work or could not be pressurized for work by the employer. The Employment Relations Act, 1999 instructs employers that they will need to support the formation of trade unions within the workplace through systematic election so that unions can ensure a better relationship amid the employer and the employees for a longer period of time. These legislations can be of paramount importance for the employers to ensure unbiased approach and employee trust (Business Case Studies LLP, “Employment Legislation”).
