INCOMPATIBILITY OF THE PLAYSTATION III (PS3) WITH NEWER SYSTEMS/SOFTWARE/EXTERNAL DRIVES Incompatibility of the PlayStation III (PS3) with Newer Systems/Software/External Drives Author Author Affiliation Date Introduction A PlayStation 3 (simply PS3) is a gaming platform. In other words, it is a system which reads PS3 video playing games. A lot of models of PS3 platform have been released by Sony (that is a popular PlayStation production company). These models are developed on the basis of different levels of memory power and diverse models for different nations around the world. In this scenario, the majority, however not all, different technology based models of PlayStation 3 have been released with wireless networking features. Additionally, the wireless internet features are added as a standard on the slim PS3 gamming model or some models of PS3 with a storage capacity over 40 GB. However, the model with a storage capacity of 20 GB does not contain a wireless PS3 network gaming adapter, and an adapter was not made available for the original 20 GB model of the PlayStation 3. Thus, this kind of things created various compatibility issues for this well known and well linked gaming platform (Valdes, 2011) and (Bliss & Everett, 2011). This paper will discuss some of the important compatibility issues in case of PlayStation III (PS3) with other systems and/or external drives. This research is aimed at discovering the issues that are creating problems regarding technology compatibility with other devices, drivers and applications. PS3 Gaming Compatibility PlayStation 3 is the 3rd model of gaming platform that is developed by Sony, a well-known video game foundation. In fact, PlayStation-3 was released on November 2006 in the United States and in Europe it was released in March 2007; however it had previously been made available in trade exhibitions in Tokyo, Japan in 2005. Additionally, one of the key benefits that Play-station 3 included is the existence of a Blu-ray Disc, with a storage capacity of approximately 60GB. Thus, it demonstrates that PlayStation 3 could generate high quality videos for different storage media such as CDs, DVDs, SACD and BD-ROM. In addition, if somebody desires to buy a Blu-ray Disc player separately, they will need to pay approximately $1,000 (USD), otherwise they can buy PlayStation 3 in $600 USD since it integrates Blu-ray Disc (Bocco & Harris, 2011) and (Valdes, 2011). Although PlayStation 3 is a platform designed for games however games are a second reason PlayStation 3 is immensely well-liked. Additionally, PlayStation 1 games did not run in PlayStation 2 however all the games available in PlayStation 2 can be played without issues in PlayStation 3. As a result, PlayStation 2 required developing new games. In addition, PlayStation-3 offers numerous serious benefits over other gaming systems and platforms like X-Box. These benefits, though, take a cost. In this scenario, the average cost of PlayStation 3 games was approximately $60. In also includes the high price of the PlayStation in the initial releases (which was $500-$600), and gaming immediately got extremely costly. Moreover, when PlayStation 3 was released into the market, simply 15 games were available, and most of them sold out within 3-4 days (Bocco & Harris, 2011) and (Valdes, 2011). Basic Issues In spite of high level popularity of PlayStation 3 there are still some high level issues which people face with PlayStation 3 when it is used with external devices and data storage mediums. These issues and aspects lead to a little low performance of PlayStation 3 technology. The PS3 offers several compatibility problems when it approaches to PS2 games, as this difficulty was there in scenario of newest console of gaming of PS3 units as well as all the Sonys next generation devices from Europe. Additionally, the new PS3 model makes use of software emulation, for the reason that it does not encompass PS2 hardware in it; as a result the issues of backward compatibility were expected. In addition, hardcore gamers have attempted running the well-known game Gran Turismo 4 on one of the latest PS3s and found a lot of bugs (Bocco & Harris, 2011), (Bliss & Everett, 2011) and (PS3Problems, 2011). Moreover, these compatibility issues comprise de-synchronization of the majority of the players all through a network PS3 gaming conference and a less effective playback of the introduction FMV (85 percent of the standard performance). In addition, there were as well some issues with the vehicles that did not act similar to they were intended to all through game-play in a number of demo FMA series. Most recently, however not least the hit-title Gran Turismo 4 marked a number of bizarre graphical properties coming into view arbitrarily on the screens top left corner, as the game was being played on an 80GB PS3 (Bocco & Harris, 2011), (Bliss & Everett, 2011) and (PS3Problems, 2011). Other Compatibility issues Some of the major issues in PlayStation 3 appeared with its initial release. These problems belong to 60GB hard-drive, memory card slots, backwards compatibility and elevated energy utilization. From the first day of its release on March 2007, the previous $799 consoles were not effectively ventilated. Additionally, the guarantee stage is long past when the PlayStation processes unexpectedly ends and the racing video game “Need for Speed Shift” no longer works. The fact is acknowledged as Yellow Light of Death which is abbreviated as YLOD. In addition, in PlayStation 3 boot process, the hardware of PS3 tests itself along with its overall processes and functions. In this scenario, the yellow light appears in case of any fault. However, some of the critical and common causes PS3 issues include thermal tension that directs to cracks and disturbance to the solder joints. Additionally, the PS3 components like that processors are typically intact. However, experts are looking for similar on Xbox 360 equivalent that achieved beneath the names Red Ring of Death (RROD shortly), ROD, or Red Lights of Death (RLOD) celebrity. Moreover, the PS3 gaming platform has faced same issues which were present in Microsoft console as well plagued through solder issues (PS3Problems, 2011). USB 3.0 Compatibility Issues PS3 as a new gaming platform is evolving day by day. Additionally, PS3 is also a well known name in high-tech gaming and entertainment. There are lots of new developments and enhancements made in this scenario those lead to better performance and working of the gaming comfort of people. Consequently, the new versions of PS3 are able to offer enhanced capability of the gaming and smooth performance. As a result, it attracts more customers. On the other hand, while using PS3 people require connecting some external hard drive for the sake of overall improvement of PS2 gaming capability. In this scenario the PS3 technology based system offers a great deal of support and backward compatibility for the external hard drive recognition and working. In this way, we are able to transfer data and play games through the external hard drive (Yahoo! Inc. , 2011). However, one of the biggest issues that are seen in case of PS3 is its incompatibility to support USB 3.0 technology. In this scenario we are not able to connect some high-tech external data drives with the PS3 that causes various issues regarding low working and gaming experience of PS3. In this scenario, the USB 3.0 technology based external hard drives are not usable with PS 3 gaming platform that leads to less effective gaming impression of the PS 3. However in case of external storage drives compatibility we are assured that PS 3 is very much compatible with the USB 2.0 based data transfer and recognition technology. These all aspects lead to some of issues of backward compatibility of the PS3 systems. On the other hand, if we have a PS3 gaming platform then we also need to purchase the external data drive for the personal use. In addition, we also need to make sure that this storage drive encompasses USB 2.0 technology otherwise it will be un-unable for PS3 technology based platforms (Yahoo! Inc. , 2011). The main reason of this incompatibility is that USB 3.0 has a high data transfer and acceptance speed as compared to traditional USB 2.0 technology that is why this USB 3.0 is faster than USB 2.0 and USB. This is the main reason that this high data transfer rate is not acceptable at the PS 3 gaming console. The speed of the USB port (USB 3.0) has nothing to do with the disk drives connections. Since PS3 simply integrates USB 2.0 ports that offers data transfer will simply move at 2.0 speeds it would not make use of the 3.0 potential that HDD has (Yahoo! Inc. , 2011). Conclusion A PlayStation 3 (simply PS3) is a gaming platform. In other words, it is a system which reads PS3 video playing games. A lot of models of PS3 platform have been released by Sony (that is a popular PlayStation production company). These models are developed on the basis of different levels of memory power and diverse models for different nations around the world.
