Electronic and Digital Media Industry Affiliation: Describe the role technology has played in electronic and digital media Electronic media is that which requires an electronic device to be accessed while digital media is a type of electronic media but its data is stored in a digital and not analog form. Other than technology aiding in the production of the electronic and digital media, it performs other roles including assisting in marketing, distribution and even consumption. Examples of these roles include using internet to market products of the companies, shop for needed items, through satellite, people are able to view many programs aired from all over the world, and technology through the electronic media provides direction to new places (which is especially useful to strangers) through the GPRS.

Discuss the historical and contemporary roles of media in society One of the historical and contemporary roles the media plays is it acts as a surveillance for the society. Media broadcasts and passes down information about the happening s in the society including any threats hence making people make counterplans. In the past, media played a role of educating the public about ethics but the issue is not so pronounced in the contemporary times. The media in the brink of company competitions in this contemporary times acts as a marketing channel where companies advertise their products in the different media forms hence making their consumers aware of the different products by different companies.

They also participate in social awareness campaigns, political campaigns and other forms of campaigns aimed at teaching the society (Herkman, 2012). Describe how the chemical and electronic technology of photography, recording, and transmission has advanced from initial discovery to the present Photography before the 1960s was not electronic but used chemicals and hence the quality of the image was questionable. The contemporary times however have led to photography becoming digital and the images clearer and hence lowering the cost of photography in general and even the cost of purchasing the cameras that are consumer friendly.

Recording has also moved from use of gramophones and other cylinder devices to the crystalline CDs, cassette tapes and to now DVDs and iPods among others. Transmission of the radio waves has also evolved from the use of multiple channels and relying on cable transmission that were RF-based to the current use of fiber optic cables (Vivian, 2010). Describe how mass media uses these technological innovations The mass media uses the transmission, photography and recording for purposes of marketing.

By using these channels of communication, they pass information and exposure of company or organization products and services to the consumers. When done right and in an appealing way, consumer demand increases. Other than that, the mass media is being used by educational institutions as a means to educate the students other than relying on the books since the mass media passes on current updated information unlike those in books (Ransbotham, 2012). Communication of important news by the journalists in the mass media through photographs is another form of technological innovation that the mass media is utilizing.

It is as a result of this technological innovation that satellite broadcasts and digital recording (all which are different forms of mass media) are able to happen. Analyze how the development of digital technology has affected the content, distribution, and style of electronic media Digital technology has changed from analog technology (whose technology, storage and even transmission was not very perfect) to a form that enables transmission that is perfect and can be copied and duplicated into many different copies.

This makes distribution easier and faster than before. Digital technology also helps to change different contents like videos, audio and even texts to a form that can be read and manipulated by the computer easily hence enabling easier transmission by any form of electronic media. This therefore means that the digital technology enables perfect transmission of the content, recording and even storage. The rapid impact of the digital technology on the telecommunications industry has led to an increased speed in consumer mobility but also a cut in jobs.

Discuss how the role of mass media has changed with these developments With the digital technology holding the day, the print media’s importance has continued to decline as more people get the information that is printed in the print media over the internet and they get the information immediately unlike having to wait for the print media information several hours. This has led to many print media to close and people losing their jobs as the consumers’ purchasing powers decline. Shopping has also become easier as people shop online for clothing, food, furniture and even books and just wait for delivery without incurring the extra costs of travelling to go chose the items and other miscellaneous costs incurred in the process.

With the unveiling of digital technology, life is becoming less hectic and more organized reducing people’s movement. This reduced movement makes people lazy and unhealthy as they do not exercise (which they used to do when having to move from one place to another). References Herkman, J.
