Our parents are looking for what’s best for us. They mean well for us. But sometimes they just don’t know where to stop anymore. Sometimes they will cross the line. Our parents have very high academic expectations for us and sometimes we cannot live up to them. It is also hard for us children when times like this come. We will be concerned about disappointing them. What is difficult is to let them understand that each of us has our own field of interests. Sometimes these interests are totally different from what our parents hope for us.

When I was young, my parents wanted me to become a doctor. They were very excited and they fed me with all the good opportunities of being a doctor. They said that it is high earning and if I wanted to become someone people will look up to in the future, I better become a doctor. A doctor is a much respected profession that people will always be proud of. As a child, I just listened to them feeding me with all these advantages of becoming a doctor. But I never felt really excited about this. I was just open to whatever comes my way.

But my mom and dad always reminded me to study harder than anybody else. They said that to be able to go to medicine school, I have to ace my grades and focus on studying than playing. So most of my childhood experience was basically staying inside my room and facing all the books that my parents provided me. My friends were playing outside and I am left alone inside my room to study. I got really envious of what my friends are doing and I started to hate my parents for forcing to me to study.

But I can’t do anything about it. I was just a child and I didn’t have any guts to tell my parents about what I’m feeling. So I decided to just let them push me to do everything their way and just follow whatever they say. I just told myself that it is for my best. My parents were really not the type of parents who don’t respect my will. I know they were just concerned about my future that is why they’re pushing me to study hard. Growing up with the thought of becoming a doctor someday gave me a great pressure of becoming the best among the rest.

My parents always remind me that I have to prioritize my studies among everything. Medical school can be really tough and I have to be ready for it. So I did everything that I could to learn and I really studied hard. My parents were very supportive and they gave me everything that I need. But as I grow older, I learned a lot of things. I even realized that it was not really my dream to become a doctor. I am just living the dream my parents have for me. Because of this understanding, I lost the will and drive to study harder.

But I cannot break my parents’ heart and hopes for me. So I just continued to study and took up medicine. But I was not able to successfully pass the course. My parents eventually accepted that medicine was not really for me. They knew that I did everything for them and their dream to become a doctor. But we cannot force what is not meant for me. As I look back to what my parents did, I am thankful that they did their best to guide me. Even though things did not work out for me to become a doctor, I am still proud of being what I have become today.

I can say that my parents really wanted what is best for me. Now I clearly understand about the profession of being a doctor and it is really one of the best careers a person could ever dream of. I truly understand why my parents chose this career path for me. But I am not regretting that I did not become a doctor. Kallukaren (2005) stated that parents often hold the most influence when it comes to helping their child make the right career choice. I can really attest that this is really what’
