The biological component of the disorders as illustrated above mostly reflects the defects in the normal functions of the body. This can be seen in the eating disorders-with possible problems in the neurotransmitters of the brain. Some personality disorders are inherited; they are a function of our biological make-up passed on from our parents and relatives. Substance-abuse disorders are sometimes taken in order to produce a biological reaction from the body. Feelings of hilarity, calmness, and euphoria are induced by taking medications and altering the normal biological functions of our body.

The cognitive component of the above disorders is seen in the way a person handles life’s challenges. The individuals in these disorders have a low perception of themselves. They perceive themselves as too fat-so they deal with it by purging and by extreme dieting. They perceive themselves as unhappy, so they make themselves happy by getting drunk or by taking in drugs. If the feeling wears off, they desire to experience it again, and so take in more alcohol and more drugs. It is a continuous and self-destructive cycle.

In gender identity disorders, individuals do not perceive themselves the way other people see them. They think they are of the other sex and manifest themselves as such. In personality disorders, they perceive themselves grandiosely; hence they think they should be treated with importance and respect. The management of these disorders consists of intense therapy. It is a long and difficult process of dealing with withdrawal symptoms and possible relapses. . The emotional component of these disorders lies in how irrational thoughts and perceptions can change their beliefs about themselves.

Individuals here have a hard time expressing their emotions. Feelings of pain and hurt are pushed back and dealt with
