Behavior Theory al affiliation Choose a theory, other than person-centered, and tell us about it. Whatis the basic belief about human nature? (Good, bad, neutral) Who is considered the developer/founder? How do individuals change? What, if any, are the specific interventions associated with this theory? I chose behavior theory as the core subject. The theory states that a person’s behavior and activity govern the study of his/her mind, regardless of what they feel, express, anticipate and believe. It explains that the behavior of a human being is based on the reinforcements or punishments which he/she experiences from the environment stimuli. The actions of a person are not governed by his/her own mental desire, but the positive or negative experiences which he/she receives from the environment. According to R. F. Skinner (2011), the radical behavior of humans does not have any free will. All their actions are based on their previous experiences with the environment. The basic belief is that every person has a good nature. This theory is associated with specific intervention including self monitoring, behavioral experiments, behavioral activation and exposure therapy. Skill training is also one of the specific interventions associated with this theory. 2. How does one go about applying this theory when working with diverse populations? Are there particular cultures/races/ethnicities with which this theory might not work? Why not? Diverse populations comprise of different people in terms of culture, race and ethnicity background. In this case, people’s behaviors are governed by their environments, responses and experiences. It is paramount to take into consideration the fact that everyone has a different cultural background. They experience different stimuli which depend on their cultural and traditional values. Therefore, I the event that one is working with diverse populations, he or she has to adjust and understand the different environments in which different people live in. it is through this that one may be able to sufficiently operate in diverse populations. When it comes to behavior theory, there are no particular cultures, races or ethnicities with which this theory might not work because most people develop their behavior according to the experiences which they receive from their surroundings. They only act according to what they desire, regardless of their past experiences. 3. Before you begin actual therapy with a client using your theory, how might you go about assessing that clients needs? Personal behavior is important in telling the needs of a client. Therefore, knowing and inquiring about their targets in life is a critical strategy in knowing their needs. These targets can in turn govern their behavioral aspects to a greater extent. Every incident in our lives has an impact on our way of looking at things, their perception and on our psychology. As a result, by assessing the incidences in clients’ lives, I will be able to perceive general ideas and experiences about the lives of my clients. Their preferences can also help a great deal in getting a fair idea about my clients’ psychology before the behavior theory (Boeree, 2015). 4. If you wanted to see how effective your theory is with clients, how might you design an investigation to discern this? An increase in the number of clients is an effective way of assessing the effectiveness of my theory. If my theory has helped my clients, it will surely create a ripple effect among others as well. Another method of assessing the effectiveness of the theory is by using surveys and questionnaires (Estep, 2015). This method can also be very helpful in determining my direction. Another way is to ask clients the questions by myself. This is a direct method which can provide with a straightforward answer from the client regarding my therapy. 5. How would you apply your theory in group work? Talk about the 4 stages of group work. What occurs in each? Group works involve the interaction of people within the same environment (Hutchison, E. D., &Charlesworth, 2003). There are four stages involved in conducting a successful group work (Teaching.unsw.edu.au, 2015). The first stage is preparation. This helps group members to know one another and therefore eases informal interaction. The second stage is giving the behavioral therapy before starting the group work. The third stage is helping the individuals in getting used to the theory so that they may be able to freely interact with one another. The fourth stage is monitoring the group work and evaluating its success (Gerald, 2013). I would use these stages while applying my theory because it stipulates a step-by-step process in which all the required procedures are incorporated. 6. What is your work setting? What are some developmental concerns that your clients/students might face, according to Erikson? Piaget? Kohlberg? Schlossberg (Adults)? For this purpose, my work setting will include the formation of Community Counseling & Psychology Clinic by inducting a number of psychologists for the purpose of providing counseling to a number of psychologically challenged clients. According to Piaget & Kohlberg, allowing them to interact with each other (counselor-patients) will not only allow them develop the behavioral skills but will also give me an opportunity to inspect them in their diverse environment. The development concern, which my clients might face in the light of Erikson’s behavioral development theory for adults, is the dilemma between generativty (relates to the contribution an individual can make to the world) and stagnation (Cherry, 2015). This way in my work setting of Community Counseling & Psychology Clinic, the concept of generativity is related to providing a quality treatment to psychological patients. This is where they will need self knowledge, knowledge of situation, and support. They will be taught different strategies to cope with this transition phase same as the strategies described in Schlossbergs Theory for Adult Transition. 7. What are the typical career concerns your clients/students might face? What are some interventions that might address these concerns? The most vital concern is lack of confidence to interact with the environment. Another concern can be the uncertainty of the future regarded under the vicinity of the environment. There are many interventions which I can consider to help my clients in this case. Arrangement of group works can be one of them. Their behavioral development is also necessary to assist in developing a positive perception about the future career and the surrounding environment as well. Applying these interventions can certainly address these issues. 8. Given your theory of choice. How do you go about integrating the core conditions into working with clients using your theory? Which of the core conditions would you identify as being the most important? Why? Carl Rogers formulated a method for counseling by defining three core conditions for therapeutic change (G. Corey, 2011). These are termed as: congruence, acceptance, empathy and concreteness. Congruence refers to be honest, truthful, sincere and pertinent in your approach. It is the ethical obligation of the counselor to deliver his/her honest and sincere opinion to the client. Empathy means considering yourself in your client’s place. This helps to understand the pain and agitation of the client/student. Acceptance, also known as Unconditional Positive Regard (UPR), means not judging the client on your own notions. The most important core condition, in my opinion, is the condition of congruence because it is every client’s right to get the truthful, sincere and pertinent opinion from me(Cherry, 2015). 9. Of all the ethical obligations we owe clients, which would you say is the most crucial to the counseling relationship? Why? For you personally, what might be the most challenging ethical obligation to adhere to? Of all the ethical obligations in a counseling relationship, patient-therapist confidentiality is the most crucial ethical obligation in my opinion. This is because counseling requires total confidentiality. People face different problems and ensuring that these problems stay between them and their therapists is imperative (Corey, 1990). The most challenging ethical obligation to adhere to is the distance counseling. It involves the broadcasting of the counseling responsibilities and it could jeopardize confidentiality. However, online counseling via websites and e-mails has added a lot more dimensions to it. That is why, long distance counseling adds up to the responsibilities of the counselor.References (B. F.
