Argument and Thesis of the Article: Spatial Segregation and Gender Stratification in the Workplace [N a m e] INTRODUCTION:The essay “Spatial Segregation and Gender Stratification in the Workplace” is written by Daphne Spain, in order to explain the difference in the work space on the basis of gender. This essay is a part of the author’s larger work, ‘Gendered Spaces’. In this essay the author writes about the relationship between the control over the work space and gender, however the ideas presented in this article can also be generalized to other scenarios apart from workplace.

ARGUMENT AND THESIS:The author is of the view that there is considerable difference in the level control men and women have over their work space. The existing working environment results in isolating women from men and they have limited chances of sharing information and knowledge with others. Sharing of information and knowledge is necessary for the career growth and development, but the current working setup restricts women from interacting with others (Spain, 218). Author has provided statistics regarding the type of jobs open for women and according to these statistics the three most common jobs for women are of teacher, nurse, and secretary (Spain, 217).

On the other hand most of the top level and managerial jobs are occupied by men (Spain, 219). The managers are provided with more authority over their private work space as compared to the secretaries. The reason provided for this spatial arrangement is that managers are involved in the process of important decision making which should not be open to all. Apart from this the secretaries are not allowed to share information with any other person, as the information they poses is confidential nature (Spain, 218).

This also restricts them from interacting with other people.CRITICAL QUESTIONS:1. The author has provided the argument that there is difference in the authority provided over work space to managers and secretaries/clerical staff (Spain, 220), however this does not imply that this difference is between men and women as the male clerical staff is also provided with the same work space as female clerical staff.2. The argument provided by the author in the essay that secretaries or clerical staff is not allowed to share the information and thus restrict them from achieving a particular staff (Spain, 218) is again general and cannot be related with the difference among genders as same is true for male clerical staff.

Apart from this not only secretaries are restricted from sharing the confidential information but managers are also not allowed to provide confidential information about organization to anyone.SUMMARY OF GROUP C READING:John Fraser Hart in his essay “The Rural Landscape”, describes about the importance of landscape in a country like America and he suggests that one should see, think and explore such landscapes instead of just watching them on Television or movies. It is important to understand the differences in rural areas as well as in urban areas if someone would like to get a better know-how about what America is.

Rural areas have their own significance because of their history and importance of natural landmarks. The importance of rural areas can be identified as almost every chapter of talks about American landscape and rural cart. In trying to explore more and more rural areas in America, the writer makes an attempt to discover different places in rural areas which are historical important (Rader, 204-214).
