According to an estimate that was made by World Health Organization, that by 2030, around 366 million people will have been diagnosed with diabetes and approximately 75% of the patients will be from developing countries (WHO, n.d.). Diabetes needs a periodic clinical follow-up and a life-long treatment. Patients diagnosed with diabetes require health care services on a regular basis to help in attaining good control of body weight, body lipids, blood pressure and glucose level, and also to help in delaying or reducing the onset of complications and prevent or delay death resulting from diabetes.

According to studies that have been conducted, the use of intensive insulin lowers the risk of microvascular complications and might also lower the risk of macrovascular complications in patients with diabetes (Ishii et al., 2013). The periodic health-care check-up which every patient diagnosed with diabetes should attend includes laboratory testing with the aim of assessing whether there need for using a more aggressive therapy. Treating diabetes requires aggressive treatment which includes the use of insulin therapy and being informed on the nutrition to take.

A huge number of patients diagnosed with diabetes are reported to have no health insurance. Patients without health insurance are less likely to comply with medical care (WHO, n.d.).Diabetes is a chronic condition that needs the patients to receive continuous medical care and patient self-management education to aid in preventing severe complications and also in reducing the risk of long-term complications. The lower levels of diabetes that are observed in patients diagnosed with diabetes living in low socio-economic groups is due to a lack of awareness such as self-management of diabetes.

Research that has been conducted on technology-based self-management, like the use of messaging services to educate patients on diabetes self-management, has provided evidence.
