In a short amount of time, I became one of its officers and have since been a productive and enthusiastic member of the Club. In addition, I feel that economics as a field of study is a perfect best match for my personality: I have a passion for mathematics and I am invigorated when I am working with people and exchanging ideas with them. I want to know how people think and why they think the way that they do. For me, economics personalizes mathematics and a puts a human face to the study of numbers.

It is largely for these reasons that I am applying to the Economics program at UCLA. When I joined the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), I learned to appreciate that the sense of order and security given by accounting rules and standards. Although I also like finance, I found it too much like accounting and less exciting than economics. In fact, economics is quite different from accounting because it explores basic questions such as why people want to earn and spend money and how and why they do it.

In several IMA meetings I have learnt about customers and markets, supply and demand, inflation and investments and have been fascinated by the idea that mathematical models can show how people think and behave. In my present position as Assistant Operations Manager with a world renowned logistics company, I have been given first-hand business insight and this has reinvigorated my interest in how our economy works. Finally, from a personal perspective, I would like to learn about economics and the rules for doing business because I hope to one day be successful like my father, whom I admire greatly, even after he left our family.
